- ANTHONY'S #2 VS. PRELIMINARY Monday August 13, 2001 ~ 7:30pm
With a score of one to one and the bottom of the second inning Greg Cunningham hit a home run over the left center field fence that put Anthony's ahead. From that point on the pitching took center stage. The score stayed that way until with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning Anthony's pitcher Bob Mc Cormick ran out of gas and thinking of his team first ask to come out. Anthony's other pitcher Marc Alicia was brought into the game. Thats when Anthony's infield committed two errors and before you know it the score is four to two Preliminary. Now its the top of the seventh inning with Preliminary's John Borrelli still pitching brilliantly now has Anthony runners at first and second base and one out. He gets Ryan Andrews to fly out to left for the second out then gets Bobby Markley to ground to third for a force out that ends the game. So Preliminary takes the first game by the score of 4 to 2.
- PRELIMINARY VS. ANTHONY'S #2 Tuesday August 14, 2001 ~ 7:30pm
In game one it was Preliminary's pitching that carried them all night to a win. But in game two it was what got them in trouble in the very first inning. Preliminary's Starting pitcher Vince Menello walked the first three Anthony's batters then third baseman Neil Spence hit a ball off of the left field fence that cleared the bases. It was in the bottom of the fourth inning with Anthony's leading four to three when Bobby Markley hit a home run to make the score five to three. Anthony's pitcher Marc Alicea had the right pitches the rest of the game to get Anthony's a 6 to 3 win. This evens up the series at one game each. A littel spat (hollering back and fourth by a few players at each other) Started between the teams after the hand shake when both teams were back on their side lines. But nothing came of it. See you Thursday.
- ANTHONY'S #2 VS. PRELIMINARY Thursday August 16, 2001 ~ 7:30pm
They have been saying for years that good pitching can stop good hitting anytime. A old Philadelphia A's manager Connie Mack even said pitching is 90% of the game. Well on a night where both teams were tied at one win each. Pitching was the name of the game. It was Preliminary's John Borrelli back starting his second game in this series and facing Anthony's pitcher Bobby Mc Cormick. The game started almost like the first game of this series Anthony's #2 got off to a fast start scoring a quick run in the top of the first inning to go up 1 to 0. Preliminary came back in the third to tie the score at one. The pitching kept both teams at bay until the top of the sixth inning when Anthony's shortstop Gil Newton Jr. led off the inning with a double but Borrelli puts down the next three batters in order. In the bottom of the sixth Preliminary gets a runner catcher Joe Ristine on base and with one out outfielder Danny Hughes hits a line drive into right field where Anthony's Ryan Andrews fires a great throw to third but the ball takes a bad bounce and goes off of third baseman Neil Spence's leg and goes down the left field line allowing Ristine to score all the way from first. Mc Cormick shut the door after that. Now its top of the seventh inning Borrelli gets the first Anthony batter to pop up. With one out Neil Spence comes to bat and hits a line drive right over third base Preliminary's left fielder jumpes on the ball like a cat and gets the ball back into the in field to hold Spence to a single. The next two Anthony hitters fly out to center and ground out third to first to end a superb game. Final score Preliminary 2 Anthonys 1 ~ SERIES Preliminary 2 to 1.
- PRELIMINARY VS. ANTHONY'S #2 Friday August 17, 2001 ~ 7:30pm
It was 9:02pm Friday Night August 17, 2001. And after eight years in the league The Preliminary Bar could finally call themselfs Champions of the Rotan league. It was game four and Anthony's #2 started off this game just about like their three other games with Preliminary in this series. They get two quick runs in the first inning on a home run by shortstop Gil Newton Jr. Preliminary comes back to tie the game in the third inning. Then in the fourth Anthony's Ralph Ulmer drives in two very big runs to put Anthony's back on top by the score of four to two. That was all of the scoring until the top of the sixth when Preliminary's bats caught fire as they banged out six hits and scored four runs on these hits making the score six to four Preliminary. At this point Preliminary's Coach Pete Boyer puts in his ace pitcher John Borrelli you see Borrelli has allowed Anthony's just three runs in his first two wins (14 innings) in this series. John again pitches his magic over Anthony's and shuts the door on them in the last two innings giving up no runs to bring the first ever league Championship to The Preliminary Bar with a 6 to 4 win. This league congratulations our new league 2001 Champions. And thanks these two outstanding teams for an absolutely fabulous championship series. You showed everyone why this league is the best there is in the City Of Philadelphia. With out a doubt the 2002 season will even be better. See you next Spring.
We do apologize to John Borrelli for misspelling his name wrong all season long on the website. We asked at the beginning of the season when we put the team rosters on the site. If we had any misspelled names to let us know a.s.a.p.. No one said anything to us until August 26, 2001.
